Daily Herbal Habit #4 Herbal Tea

I admit I like the occasional coffee, and I am without a doubt addicted to yerba mate (see the previous post for details), which is my everyday tea.  Yet, first thing in the morning when I wake up I’ve started a new daily herbal habit, and that’s “Fresh Herb tea”.

Brewing some Sage & Parsley

When I say fresh I mean FRESH.  I literally head out to the garden to see what is blooming, take a few leaves to put in hot water and steep for 10+ minutes.   The correct technical term would be herbal “infusion”.

What you may not know is how beneficial and healing these small herbal green leafed garden companions are. I’ve compiled a small list of what I have growing, in a very small space, with minimal effort, and yet maximum benefits:

Sage is an undervalued herb, there is a medieval saying that says ‘why should a man die while he grows sage in his garden’.  It’s all in the name sage of course also means wise, but its Latin name comes from salvare, which means ‘to save’.

It is anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antiseptic, antimicrobial and it clears mucus and reduces sweating. It’s said to prevent diabetes and is incredibly beneficial in treating fevers and colds, sore throat, asthma and headaches as well as indigestion and gastrointestinal upsets. So next time you feel a cold coming on, brew up some sage, mix in some honey and you’re good to go.

Parsley is rich in vitamins A, C and E, and minerals and is anti-inflammatory and an antioxidant. It’s also a diuretic – which means it relieves water retention.  This is great to drink or chew on after a garlicky meal as it also refreshes the mouth and breath,  this may be the original reason it made its way on to our plates as a garnish.

 Rosemary: is one of my personal favourites, It was most popular in ancient Rome, it’s prolific and easy to grow. Which is why you can spot it in many home gardens.  It not only boosts your memory but also your brain power and can clear a headache. It is an antioxidant, astringent, anti-inflammatory, stimulates poor circulation as well as being restorative and uplifting.

Thyme Culpeper noted it to be a strengthener of the lungs.  Is antiseptic, antioxidant, tonic,  antispasmodic – which means it relieves muscle spasms and was often used to expel worms.  It’s the herb to go to for asthma, coughing, whooping cough, bronchitis or hay fever.

 Peppermint: Is great for the digestion, relieves muscle spasms, has a cooling effect and yet increases

sweating.  It’s particularly good for irritable bowel syndrome or sensitive stomachs as it increases the digestive juices, yet relaxes the stomach muscles and relieves cramps, colic and gas.

And these, are just a few of the simple garden herbs, filled with such magic – be sure to look into what you have growing in your garden.  Who knew you had such a delicious, beautiful green and affordable pharmacy right outside.

The Benefits of Essential Oils

I know I tend to go on about Comfrey, yet there are also other ingredients that rock, and these are Essential Oils.

If I went into all the benefits of Essential Oils I might be here all day, there is quiet a few though.  Essential oils are not to be confused with perfumed oils, which just smell lovely – these super stars are made by almost capturing the pure essence of the plant and hence their magic.  This means they also capture the many many healing properties of the plants, which we can in turn benefit from by either using them through their aroma such as in aromatherapy or by using with a carrier oil/base directly on the skin itself.

These can easily be used everyday for a multitude of uses; If you have a trouble sleeping try lavender, nauseous try a bit of ginger,  in enhance your brain power and memory try rosemary, tea tree oil works a treat on athlete’s foot and grapefruit is uplifting and brings joy….

These oils have been used and highly valued for thousands of years, from Egyptians used Frankincense, cedar and myrrh as part of the mummification process for their ability to preserve and embalm. They were also used in Persia, Greece, India and China –  and that legacy carries on today in our uses of the oils, be it in products, perfumes, aromatherapy massages and air vaporisers.

Here are some of the benefits of just a few of the key Essential Oils I use;

Bergamot Essential Oil support the bodies healing it helps to reduce the feeling of pain, works with the skins pigmentation and melanin to even the tone, and it has both a calming effect on the nerves.

Palma Rosa is a very gentle on the skin, yet has a powerhouse of properties, it promotes the growth of new and old skin cell renewal and rejuvenation all while it helps to repair any damage. And on top of this it is hydrating, in how it supports the skin tissues retain their moisture especially good on cracked dry skin, all while it’s lovely scent is uplifting and calming.

Neroli Essential Oil has many benefits, it cares for the skin making it smooth, glowing and helps it to maintain the right moisture and oil balance.  On top of this is supports tissue regeneration and is a powerful anti-depressant, so it cheers up your spirit as well as your skin.

Wayfarers Magic, Comfrey Ointment;

Frankincense Oil promotes the regeneration of new skin cells and increases the health of the existing cells and tissue, it is known for its astringent properties which tone and life the skin, contracting the muscles and reducing the appearance of wrinkles, stretch marks and scars. Comfrey Body OilThe ability of Rosemary Essential Oil to relieve pain has resulted in its extensive use in treating headaches, muscle pains, rheumatism and arthritis. It is also anti-inflammatory qualities as well, which makes it very good for relieving the pain from sprains and joint aches. It is also known to stimulate blood circulation, which can relieve pain and also aid in coagulation of wounds for faster healing.

Bedouin’s Charm Body/ Bath Oil;

Grapefruit Essential Oil has a great many uses, it’s especially good for the skin due to it’s properties as an Antioxidant, Tonic, Stimulant (Energising), Antidepressant. It also works as a Diuretic and Lymphatic, of which the last two also makes it a great detoxifier of the skin and body.
